Terms and Conditions
Last updated: 28 June 2026
These Terms and Conditions, including the End-User License Agreement set out below (together, the "Terms"), are a binding agreement between you and Aditya Parupudi ("we", "us", "the developer") governing your download, installation, and use of the PaperMap software application (the "Software") and the website at papermap.adityaparupudi.com (the "Website"). By downloading, installing, activating, or using the Software, or by using the Website, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Software.
1. License grant
Subject to your compliance with these Terms and payment of the applicable fee, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable license to install and use the Software for your personal or internal research purposes, on up to the number of devices your license permits (currently two). The license is valid for the period stated at purchase (currently one year) and may be renewed by purchasing again. We reserve all rights not expressly granted.
2. License keys and activation
- Licensed features require a valid license key.
- Each key may be activated on a limited number of devices (currently two); the Software verifies this with our licensing provider.
- You are responsible for keeping your key confidential. Do not share, resell, sublicense, or publish it.
- We may suspend or revoke keys that are shared, abused, charged back, refunded, or fraudulently obtained.
3. License restrictions
You agree not to, and not to permit any third party to:
- copy (except for a single backup), redistribute, sublicense, sell, rent, lease, lend, or otherwise commercially exploit the Software;
- modify, adapt, translate, or create derivative works of the Software;
- reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code, except, and only to the extent, that this restriction cannot be excluded by applicable law;
- remove, alter, or obscure any proprietary notices;
- circumvent, disable, or interfere with the license, activation, or any security or technical-protection mechanism;
- use the Software for any unlawful, infringing, or fraudulent purpose, or in violation of any applicable law or third-party right; or
- use the Software to gain unauthorized access to, attack, probe, scan, disrupt, overload, circumvent the security of, or damage any computer, system, network, account, website, service, or data ("hacking" or similar activity), whether your own or that of any other person.
4. Acceptable use and your responsibility
PaperMap is a tool for organizing, searching, mapping, and summarizing academic literature. You are solely responsible for how you use the Software and for all activity carried out through it. You are responsible for ensuring your use complies with all applicable laws and regulations, your institution's and employer's policies, academic-integrity rules, copyright and licensing terms of any materials you process, and the terms of any third-party services you connect. You are responsible for the content, files, and data you process, and for all consequences arising from your use.
5. Third-party services and AI output
The Software can connect to third-party services that you choose, including academic databases (e.g. OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, arXiv, CORE, PubMed) and AI providers (using your own API key). We do not control these services and are not responsible for their availability, accuracy, content, security, costs, or terms, and your use of them is governed by their own agreements. AI-generated summaries, citations, and other automated output may be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or fabricated; you must independently verify all output before relying on it, and you are responsible for any fees or usage limits associated with API keys you provide.
6. Disclaimer of warranties
The software and website are provided "as is" and "as available", with all faults, and without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, conditions, and representations, whether express, implied, statutory, or otherwise, including without limitation any implied warranties or conditions of merchantability, satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose, title, accuracy, quiet enjoyment, and non-infringement, and any warranties arising from course of dealing or usage of trade.
Without limiting the foregoing, we do not warrant that the Software or Website will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components, or that any defects will be corrected, or that any results (including AI output or citation data) will be accurate, reliable, or complete. You assume the entire risk as to the quality, performance, and results of the Software.
7. Limitation of liability (including misuse and hacking)
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:
- We are not liable for how you or any third party use, or are unable to use, the Software, including any use that violates these Terms or any law.
- We are not liable for any misuse of the Software, including without limitation any use to access, attack, disrupt, probe, or damage any system, network, account, website, service, or data, whether yours or another party's. Such use is prohibited under Section 3 and is your sole responsibility.
- In no event will we be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of or damage to data, profits, revenue, goodwill, research, business, or anticipated savings, or for business interruption or device or system damage, however caused and on any theory of liability (whether in contract, tort including negligence, strict liability, or otherwise), even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages and even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose.
- Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the Software, the Website, or these Terms will not exceed the greater of (a) the total amount you actually paid for the Software in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) USD 25.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or liabilities, so some of the above exclusions and limitations may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including, where applicable, liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or your non-waivable statutory consumer rights. Where liability cannot be fully excluded, it is limited to the minimum permitted by law.
8. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the developer and its affiliates from and against any and all claims, demands, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to: (a) your use or misuse of the Software or Website; (b) your violation of these Terms or any applicable law; (c) your violation of any third-party right, including intellectual-property, privacy, or contractual rights; or (d) the content, files, or data you process with the Software.
9. High-risk and prohibited uses
The Software is intended for general research and productivity use only. It is not designed, intended, or authorized for use in any hazardous or high-risk environment requiring fail-safe performance (such as the operation of medical, life-support, emergency, aviation, nuclear, or other safety-critical systems) where failure could lead to death, personal injury, or severe physical, financial, or environmental harm. You will not use the Software for any such purpose, and we disclaim any express or implied warranty of fitness for such uses.
10. Your data and backups
PaperMap is local-first: your library, notes, and PDFs are stored on your own device. You are solely responsible for maintaining backups of your data. We are not liable for any loss, corruption, or unavailability of your data. Our handling of personal data is described in our Privacy Policy.
11. Payment, renewal, and refunds
- The Software is sold at the price shown at checkout (currently USD 29 per year), exclusive of any taxes unless stated.
- Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the merchant of record; its terms also apply to your transaction.
- Licenses are time-limited and may be renewed by purchasing again. Prices and features may change for future purchases.
- Refunds: you may request a full refund within fourteen (14) days of purchase by emailing us at the address below. Refunds may be withheld in cases of abuse or fraud, and to the extent permitted by law.
11A. EU and EEA consumers (your statutory rights)
If you are a consumer resident in the European Union or the EEA, the following apply and prevail over anything inconsistent in these Terms:
- Your mandatory statutory consumer rights are not affected, excluded, or limited by these Terms.
- Right of withdrawal. Consumers normally have fourteen (14) days to withdraw from a purchase of digital content under Directive 2011/83/EU. Because PaperMap is digital content supplied immediately, by completing your purchase and starting to download or use the Software you expressly consent to immediate supply and acknowledge that you thereby lose your right of withdrawal once supply has begun. Independently of this, we voluntarily offer the 14-day refund described in Section 11.
- The disclaimers and limitations of liability in Sections 6 and 7 apply only to the extent permitted by the consumer-protection law applicable to you, and we remain liable as required by that law (for example, under statutory legal-guarantee rules for digital content).
- Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable EU or national law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or under non-excludable product-liability rules.
12. Intellectual property
The Software and Website, including all software code, design, text, graphics, logos, and the "PaperMap" name and branding, and all intellectual-property rights therein, are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by applicable laws. These Terms grant you a limited license to use the Software, not any ownership interest. Your own research data, notes, and content remain yours; we claim no ownership of them.
13. Updates and changes to these Terms
We may, at our discretion, release updates, modify, or discontinue the Software or any feature at any time. We may also revise these Terms from time to time; the "Last updated" date will change and the current version will be posted on this page. Your continued use of the Software or Website after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
14. Suspension and termination
These Terms and your license terminate automatically if you breach any provision, and we may suspend or terminate your license or access at any time for breach or suspected abuse, with or without notice. Upon termination, your rights cease and you must stop using and delete all copies of the Software. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including Sections 3, 5–12, and 15 — survive.
15. General
- Governing law and venue. These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands, a Member State of the European Union, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of that Member State have jurisdiction. As a consumer, you also retain the protection of the mandatory consumer-protection provisions of the law of your country of residence in the EU/EEA, which continue to apply.
- Severability. If any provision is held unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary, or severed, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force.
- Entire agreement. These Terms (with the Privacy Policy and any checkout-provider terms) are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Software and supersede all prior understandings.
- No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of it.
- Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your license without our prior written consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
- Force majeure. We are not liable for any delay or failure to perform due to causes beyond our reasonable control.
- Export and sanctions. You represent that you are not located in, and will not use the Software in, any country or by any person subject to applicable export-control or sanctions restrictions, and you will comply with all such laws.
- No third-party beneficiaries. These Terms do not create any rights for any third party.
- Independent parties. Nothing in these Terms creates any agency, partnership, or employment relationship.
- Interpretation. Headings are for convenience only; "including" means "including without limitation".
